a standard schnauzer, hair is not long as long as you keep it groomed, and they don't shed, and they are great great dogs!

you should get a dachshund.

if you raise them with kids and socialize them properly (as well with any dog) they can be a great companion.

since you prefer no long haired ones go for a smooth coat. just give him/her a bath every month and brush it. its a no keep dog.

I would highly reccomend either a border collie or an Australian Cattle Dog. I myself have an Australian cattle dog mix chow, he is well mannered smart and when in the right mood to play good around kids,other dogs, and other people.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (they are a nice medium size dog, good around kids and don't have very long hair)

Just remember most short haired dogs shed LOTS. My small labX sheds like crazy, but my little Shih-tzus lose very little hair.

You've got 2 choices: put up with tons of shedding or else get a long haired dog and keep them clipped short and spend $$$ on grooming at least 3 or 4X a year.

Border Collie they are the smartest...easiest trained most agile fun loving and most loyal dog there is.

I just lost mine recently a very very sad day, but once I get over losing her I will be looking for another one.

In saying all that go for the one that you feel an empathy with.

One other piece of advise which has always worked for me when you go look for the type of dog that you want ..let the dog pick you ..in other words if you go to see a litter of puppies the one that comes to you is the one for you cause he/she is choosing you and trusts you already.

I would check for puppies at the shelter- you will have better luck finding a medium-sized dog with the qualities you want there..dogs with short actually shed just as much as long-haired, just so you know. maybe a beagle if you are very committed to training it- they are high-energy! Mutts make very good service dogs-check them out!

You seem to want a great dog but not necessarily for breeding or for a show. My suggestion is to adopt a dog from the animal shelter. They only have a short time (usually about 5 days) after arriving there before they are put to sleep. You can tell from the different dogs which is lovable and interested in you. The cost is minimal and mixed breed dogs usually require less vet care as they are very hardy. Just think. . . you will have saved the life of one of the least fortunate creatures among us.

Yes, get a Min-pin. They look like little Dobermens but they are a different breed altogether. I have one who is now 6yrs old. He's very good with people and other dogs and cats.
