What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

My 3 year old somehow got lice, no one at her daycare had it, and she isnt around any other kids. But ever since, we shampoo and go through her hair and shampoo and go through it, and every time I think its gone, a week or 2 later I look and now its outrageously bad.

There must be 2-300 eggs in her hair and the only time I can go through it is when she is sleeping, and its just not working.

Is there anything to kill the eggs? Or loosen them from the hair strand?

And I really dont want to cut her hair.

Thank you.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

My experience with head lice is about the same. I had a 2 year old a week before my wedding that had head lice! The shampoo's did little more than slow them down so I could catch them. I eventually had to sit my daughter down in front of me and tell her not to move and put in a video she liked to watch. She hated it but I had to do it.

First, I would shampoo the hair and then section it off with hair clips. ( go to a salon and ask them to show you how to section hair) With the hair still wet (it won't be by the time you are finished but it makes it easier to section) pull small pieces out of the sectioned hair and if you spot an egg... pull it off by pinching it with your nails. Do not just toss it aside. Pinch it till you feel it snap in between your thumb nails. (this destroys the egg) You need to do this so that the child does not get re-infected by eggs that hatch on the floor.

If you see a bug, pull it off and snap it between your finger nails. Continue until you have done the entire head. This can take hours. You can not adequately get them all while the child is asleep because you have to make sure with good sections that no bugs are crawling from the uncleaned section to the clean section. This is tedious but I have found it the only surefire way to get rid of them. (Certain strains have become immune to the shampoo's- which is why it won't kill the eggs)

Now for the really fun part, do this every 2-3 days for about 2 weeks. The nit or egg takes about that long to hatch. When they are laid, they are microscopic so one nit-picking session will not do! You must check every couple of days to remove anything you have missed because the eggs get bigger with time and easier to see.

If you would like, I have also heard that using a wax removing fruit cleanser will also help the nits come off easier because it breaks down the goo that the lice use to attach it to the hair shaft.

After the first nit-picking session that was done fully as described above, then fully clean the house. Vacuum, package up stuffed animals and place them in a plastic bag for about a month someplace out of the reach of humans (garage?). This gives any eggs that are on them a chance to hatch and die before you give them back to your child. Change the child's sheets at least twice a week until you have finished the routine. Wash them in hot water. Bedding is a common place for re-infestation to occur.

People are going to tell you to use mayonnaise... don't... it doesn't work and is a bear to get out of the hair!

Some have said kerosene..... DON"T it could cause the hair to catch fire and it can not be washed out well.

Hairspray is also not very effective.

If you don't mind trying home remedies, These are most likely the least harmful and I have heard that they have worked for some:

Listerine and white Vinegar cure:

Saturate the hair with listerine mouthwash and cover with a shower cap. Leave for 2 hours then shampoo in the normal way. Then saturate the hair with white vinegar and comb with a nit comb and the vinegar destroys the glue that the head lice fix the nits to the hair with. Just comb them out.

Good luck. I hated doing this. On the up side, my daughter is now 13 and would rather die than share a comb or brush with anyone. LOL

EDIT: I have noticed that several people have mentioned the Doctor. Don't do that. The medication they will give you has begun to NOT work on the lice or the eggs. (my daughter used it twice!) One of the doctors would not even examine my daughter and actually told me to just send her to the wedding (as my flower girl) with head lice! He said the guests wouldn't mind if they got head lice from a cute little girl! Can you imagine!!! The medication the Doctor will give you is also VERY Toxic and could be harmful to your child.

REPEATING ONCE MORE FOR IMPACT: THE LICE ARE BECOMING RESISTANT TO THE SHAMPOO! THEY DON'T WORK LIKE THEY DID WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT!

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

Use the lice treatments and the combs...But also wash her hair with tea tree shampoo. They hate it! Use the comb every day.

Try changing her sheets and pillow case everyday too. They can live on those for a day or so. You also have to wash all her toys that have any kind of hair or fur. If you can't wash them then you have to put them in a bag and wait about a week before giving them back to her....Good thing Christmas is coming so she will have all new toys and not miss her old ones too much.

It can sometimes be a lot of work to get rid of those little guys, but you gotta do it.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

wash her hair with mayo like no joke it seriously works!!!

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

I would cut her hair.....if not get a fine tooth cone/comb and brush the eggs out ALSO get ridex shampoo i think?

O USE VINEGAR....EVEN WHEN SHE GETS RID OF THEM......THEY(LICE) HATE THAT

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

My mum used to pour brown vinegar through my hair when i had it when i was younger and it seemed to work but they have all sorts shampoos for it now!!

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

Go to the store and buy lice removing shampo in the hair section.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

don't wash her hair, get it dirty, put hair products in it (gel, hair spray, etc..)

lice LOVE clean hair. get her hair 'gross'!!

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

There's shampoo! It's some lice killing thing ! you could get it at a pharmacy!

GET IT!! IT WORKSS!!! IT"S STRONG THO!!! KILLS ALL THE EGGS! GO TO A PHARMACY AND ASK SOMEONE WHO WORKS THERE.

it works great.

Hope she get's better.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

rid works really good. they have a special one just for eggs....with that little pick comb.....and you have to make sure to wash everything in the house! and check other people to see if its tranferred. and you may end up having to cut her hair even though you don't want to.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

take her to the doctor if it is that bad.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

you should see a doctor ...and maybe they keep coming back because maybe..do u have a dog or maybe its not only on her head.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

shampoo her hair at least once every two weeks, and if it's not working, try mayonnaise........i know it sounds crazy, but somehow the grease works on it............just keep shampooing her hair too...........after u try the mayonnaise........every once in a while switch out......someone in my family had them and this is wat we had to do........

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

well,if u don't want to cut her hair and have the patience...pick out all the nits..and i mean all of them...then have her use NIX...that works pretty well....then wash and discard...wash all her blankets,pillowcases,hats..in very hot water...and throw away anything that came into contact with her head if you don't wanna wash it....and find out where she's getting from...i know that may be hard...but she's getting them from somewhere,right??...try that and hope that helps....

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

There is nothing that kills eggs! you need to pick em all out! you need to take all your linen %26amp; pillows %26amp; put them in the dryer for atleast an hour! you need to bag up all dolls and teddies for atleast a week! my daughter had them one time so bad that we had to cut her hair really short!! but u need to pick all those eggs out! They are a big pain the A$$!! but once u get them all! you should be good! just wear hair up %26amp; maybe use some tea tree oil! ****Animals Do Not Carry Head Lice**** they can only live on human hair! And also the shampoo you get at a pharmacy Does Not Kill them it only stuns them which makes the Live Lice easier to comb out!

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

I have heard that washing head with an oil (olive/vegetable etc.) as it makes it so they can't stick the hair/scalp.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

Talk to her doctor, but be careful with medicated shampoos they can be dangerous on younger children.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

You're going to have to contact a pediatrician and see if a prescription-strength shampoo would be safe to use on her hair. It's hard to know because she's just three, and her skin is probably really sensitive.

You may have to go through the sheets, bedding, and the clothes she's been wearing and wash EVERYTHING, and I don't even know if that will kill the eggs.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

Once my daughter got it real bad and a friend of mine used hair color (get as close to natural color as you can) and that seemed to be the one thing that worked. It seemed to kill it all and you will still have to comb out the nits as offten as you can to get them out even though they are dead. Take care.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

I remember when i was younger when i had them my mum used to put viniger in my hair and leave it to soak for about an hour then the eggs should come out easy and it should kill the nits to, i cant really remember very well but hope this helps

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

u can use the lice shampoo or dye her hair and take out all the dead eggs out or they just come back same wit the shampoo with a brush

i suggest dying it but your kid IS 3yrs old

THEY SHOULD COME OUT WITH A BRUSH U DONT NEED TO TAKE A LONG TIME DOIN IT ONE BY ONE

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

my sisters had lice. Just put her pillows and stuff that she sleps with in the washer, dryer, and then in black trash bags for about 2 weeks. On sunny days, put the bags in the sunlight. The bags will suffocate the lice. Put all of the hairbrushes the dishwasher, it will scorch the lice. Also, in the morning, cirl her hair to burn the lice. You can buy kits at Wal-mart for lice. We still have ours just in case. If you have any other daughters or sons, do the same thing. Also, ask the daycare teacher to check the other kids for head lice. She may have gotton it from hugging, or wearing a hat that wasn't hers. Good luck! (=^.^=)

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

1.Be prepared to fight a long battle. Adult lice and immature lice are pretty easy to get rid of, but their eggs are much harder to get rid of, and it is with these that the most problems crop up. People can think that they are rid of lice, but then get another case of lice from just a couple of eggs. Constant vigilance will be necessary to win this battle.

2.Get a good nit comb and thick conditioner and find a room with lots of light. Good nit combs are metal and typically cost ~$12 or more (e.g. LiceMeister or Nit Free Terminator comb). Without a good nit comb you will not be able to remove the eggs. Sit the subject down on a firm chair and cover the neck and upper body with a towel to prevent too much mess.

3.Look for the living adult lice, which have pinchers in front, and scuttle around. The small, white "crawly" things are the little immature lice and the white/brown microscopic things attached to the hair shaft are the eggs.

4.Disperse thick conditioner thoroughly through the hair of the affected person. Doing so will make the hair silky and much easier to comb through with fine tooth combs, and will also loosen the eggs so that they slide right off the strands.

Separate and clip the hair up into four sections and start combing, stopping to wipe the lice and eggs on a towel every few strokes. Continue until all the sections are done.

Repeat, wash the combs, and start again. You should comb through the hair until not a single egg or nit shows up! This will probably take an hour or so.

5.Pour a cup of white vinegar into a pitcher of water. Vinegar is also supposed to help loosen the eggs. Wash the hair out with the vinegar rinse and then with water.

6.Clean all of the infected person's contaminated belongings: clothes, towels, and bedding will need to be washed in hot water, and their mattress and room vacuumed thoroughly. Use the hottest setting on the dryer and dry for the longest time you can without harming the fabric.

7.Wait a day, and then repeat the process, sitting down, putting in the conditioner and combing through the hair. You could be be surprised after the last comb-through that the little parasites are back; although if they are, they should be back in greatly decreased numbers.

8.Again, comb through the hair until not one of the lice shows up. Repeat again. And again. And yet again. Usually two weeks will pass until all the lice are gone.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

well you could just cut her hair a little to make it ez to comb through but there is stuff to loosen the eggs but you should make shure you wash every thing and there is stuff you can spray on your bed and couch. My little girl has not had in in a long long time but there was a time when I was like where is this comming from I used the lice comb maybe put some conditioner in it so it is ez to get through and go through it with the lice comb every night for like a week then give it a week and look to see if they have came back! Hair spray is said to help keep them off I guess they don't like it ! I know its not fun for you or your little girl...Hope this helped

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

There is a product called "Not Nice to Lice", it is a natural product, not a pesticide (like Rid or Nix) so the lice cannot be immune to it (most of the time that is the reason for the re-infestations).

Use that product on her hair, wash EVERYTHING, clothes, bedding, stuffed animals, EVERYTHING. If it can't be washed then put it in the dryer on high heat, if it can't be put in the dryer then vacuum it and spray it to try to kill the lice.

After that, put tea tree oil in her shampoo. It helps kill and help prevent lice. It can also help the sores on her scalp.

What can you do about REALLY bad head lice?

Medicated lice treatments can usually kill the lice and nits, but it may take a few days for the itching to stop. Your child's doctor may recommend repeating treatment in 7 to 10 days to make sure all the nits have been killed, to avoid any risk of reinfestation.

It's also a good idea to use a fine-tooth comb on your child's hair after regular shampooing every 3 to 4 days for 2 weeks. Wetting the hair beforehand is recommended because it temporarily immobilizes the lice and they become easier to comb out.

Keep in mind that head lice don't survive long once they fall off a person. So it's unnecessary to spend a great deal of time and money trying to rid the house of lice. here are some simple steps you can take to help get rid of the lice and their eggs, and help prevent a lice reinfestation:

Wash all bed linens and clothing that's been recently worn by anyone in your home who's infested in very hot water (130 degrees Fahrenheit, or 54.4 degrees Celsius) then put them in the hot cycle of the dryer for at least 20 minutes.

Dry clean any clothing that isn't machine washable.

Have bed linens, clothing, and stuffed animals and plush toys that can't be washed dry-cleaned. Or, put them in airtight bags for 2 weeks.

Vacuum carpets and any upholstered furniture (in your home or car).

Soak hair-care items like combs, barrettes, hair ties or bands, headbands, and brushes in rubbing alcohol or medicated shampoo for 1 hour. You can also wash them in hot water or just throw them away.

Because lice are easily passed from person to person in the same house, other infested family members will also need treatment to prevent the lice from coming back.

In your efforts to get rid of the bugs, there are some things you shouldn't do. Some don'ts of head lice treatment include:

*Don't use a hair dryer on your child's hair after applying any of the currently available scalp treatments, because some contain flammable ingredients.

*Don't use a cream rinse or shampoo/conditioner combination before applying lice medication.

*Don't wash your child's hair for 1 to 2 days after using a medicated treatment.

*Don't use sprays or hire a pest control company to try to get rid of the lice, as they can be harmful.

*Don't use the same medication more than three times on one person. If it doesn't seem to be working, your child's doctor may recommend another medication.

*Don't use more than one head lice medication at a time.

I feel the pain for ya i really do its so hard to get rid of. This is what i did.I used conditioner in hair and use a fine tooth comb to get the eggs out and wipe the eggs on paper towel. I did it out in sun light to see it better. If you leave one egg then you will have the problem all over again. You can also try tree oil from the beauty shop i hear that works wonders for it.Remember to wash everything and spray everything down. Like couches and car seats. Was clothes blankets pillows. Dolls with hair ya got to be carefull.Use hot water and hot dryer.vaccum the carpets everyday and get rid of bags same day.Its hard but it will go away. hang in there

This may sound weird but when I got head lice in school and my mom couldn't get rid of it she used dog dip on my hair it smelled real bad but it got rid of the lice. She only had to treat it once and they died instantly. Try it and see if it works for your child. After you shampoo it with the dog dip use some of the detangle conditioner and then comb it. my 3 year old has natural curls and I have to use the detangler conditioner on her hair in order to brush it when she is awake. I wish you all the luck in the world in getting this problem resolved. If you don't want to use dog dip use mayonnaise. Again my 3 year old had lice when she was a baby and when children are under the age of 1 you have to be real careful when the lice products. I treated her hair with the dip but if I caught it while I was pregnant I would have had to use the mayonnaise because the rid could have been harmful to the child I was caring. If the mayonnaise sounds better try it before you try the dog dip. But I would use both just to see which one works best on her head.
