I'd check out petfinder.com and search for shelters and rescues in your area. You can search by breed. However, I'd look at the various rescues and shelters and see if any of them look more appealing to you than others.

Once you apply with the rescue or shelter, they will ask you numerous questions about your lifestyle, likes, dislikes etc. and then then will match a dog to that lifestyle.

If they don't ask you lots of questions and try and push a dog on you, go to another rescue.

Most reputable shelters and rescues will work very hard to find exactly the right dog for your family. It's hard to tell you what the right breed would be without talking to you. Let the rescue in your area help you. That's what they do and I promise you, there are excellent, trained, knowledgeble people out there who will find the perfect dog for your family.

Like I said, if they don't ask you lots of questions, move on to the next rescue. There are 100s. And don't be discouraged by the dogs they have on their site at any given time. Shelters get new dogs daily.

You should be able to bring your children to meet the dog too!

Good luck and I hope you adopt soon!

I definitely reccommend researching the website for different small breeds. I agree that Shih Tzu's can be very good with children. Jack Russels can as well but can be very hyper. It kind of depends on what acitivities you want to do with the job... Do you want one that can go everywhere with you and the kids or stay at home.

I reccommend visiting your local shelter/spca/humane society. They have staff and volunteers there that are very familiar with the dogs that are up for adoption. They can find one that fits your lifestyle. They are constantly getting new dogs and sometimes it takes awhile but it is worth it in the end. Calling isn't always the best thing... they are usually under-staffed so don't return phone calls right away. Also, some dogs are adopted the same day it was brought in. I definitely say visit... then you can take your children and see if the dog gets a long with them.

Look at a Miniature Pincher. They may not be particularly "cute" by some peoples standards they are however hansom. They will never bite a child but the owner must be mindful that their legs are tall and thin. Small children may play roughly and damage or break one of their legs. It takes weeks to train them. Once they are trained there will be no mistakes. They look similar to a Doberman Pincher however they are not related at all. They are a very old German breed of dog from the 1600's. They're supposedly a mix of the German Pincher and Italian Greyhound. They are an eleven pound "mighty mite". They'll stand their ground to any dog and are protective of their owners. Not as a fighting dog but they can hear strangers 50 feet away. They'll bark until the stranger is seated in your home. Three minutes later there in the persons lap kissing his or hre face.
