My kids have given me lice and I am at wits end. I can't get rid of the stuff no matter what I do. I have cleaned everything and treated at least 6 times. I have also tried alternative treatments. I think the problem is that I have long thick hair. My question is before I chop off all my hair...I know this is gross but are lice easier to see on brown hair because I may die my hair brown so the little buggers can't hide.
A weird question about lice?
Oh god... I have had lice so many times I lost count but I would say over 10 times at LEAST. I have dark brown hair naturally, and have dyed my hair black... It was always easy to see the nits because they are a silvery color... I don't think you are doing anything wrong as far as getting rid of them... You need to find the source, who are your kids getting it from? We always got it from the same people it seemed like... there has to be someone who has lice that your kids hang around or their friends are getting it from someone and passing it on to your kids. Try to trace it to whoever isn't getting rid of it. I know, it sounds like a lot to do... but when you try time and time again and they keep coming back, something has got to give. Dye your hair brown, it may even kill the ones that are alive because the chemicals can be pretty harsh. (tho I have my theories that lice have metal armor on their backs!) Be careful with everything you put on your head and your children too. Once I got lice from putting on a halloween mask. Some one had brought it over to our house and was sitting in the floor for about a week... I put it on and a few days later I found out I had lice... my mom was cleaning everything up to get rid of the lice, she found the mask and it was COVERED with lice. (I was about 12 years old, I didn't notice them at all.) So yeah, be extra careful.
LMAO nella... grease the crap out of your hair, well put!! haha... you can also try mayonaise, I have heard a lot of good things about mayo for lice. wrap a plastic grocery bag around your head when you use it so they don't jump out.

No they aren't easier 2 see! i've had lice be4 but i went 2 my doctor and he gave me some medicine and it burned like hell but it worked!

before you chop it off! try using tee tree oil! they will literally jump off your head. and you can try mayo on your head for 4 hours. then comb it out.

Ahhh Lice... I use to keep them when I was younger... So don't worry! DO NOT color your hair though. I have brown hair and they stick out like a sore thumb! just go to the local walmart or CVS and get the lice treatment. leave it in there a lil longer than recommended and put it up in a hair clip. then layer by later (starting from the back) take the lice comb that came in the pack, run it thru your hair. I would strongly recommened doing this every day for about 1/2 a week. they will die but it's so hard to get them all out so just run the comb thur in layers. that makes it easier and lice are heavier in the back and behind your hears. And another thing... throw away pillow cases...!!!! It's okay. DONT CUT YOUR HAIR! they will go away!

try baby oil or a whole bottle of conditioner, drown the buggers. You have to be diligent with the way you treat the process, just throw away old combs and brushes, wash every piece of clothing you have worn, towels, sheets and pillows, stuffed toys and vacuum the whole house including the mattress You have to do every one else in the house at the same time as well as their clothes and sheets. Last and most importantly you need to get the eggs out this is a must! If you do all of the above then there should be no other reason for you and your child to keep having this problem unless your children's hair is coming in contact with other children who have lice, in that case then tell the other children's parents to get off their butts and do something about it.

I have 4 kids and have found myself in the situation. I also have thick hair that is past my waist. There is no need to cut it. Just purchase a metal toothed lice comb with long "needles". You will have to comb through your hair and the children's at least 3 times a day. Any critters or eggs you comb out kill. After a few days they will be gone. In the mean time you will have to keep cleaning the beds and such. In my experience the lice spray works well. Also make sure to spray car seats and upholstery. They like to hide there.
Hope this helps.

Don't colour your hair it won't work !The only thing that works really well is go to a health food store and buy Tea tree oil shampoo and condition. Use the shampoo as the main shampoo for a month. But first use the lice treatment they sell there at the health food store and follow directions. It really works. If you use tea tree oil shampoo on yourself and your children a couple of times a month after you probably won't have another incident. Lice are like cockroaches and have developed an immunity to chemicals. Always remember whatever you put in your hair your skin absorbs. I spent $500.00 trying to get rid of lice with chemicals did not work but this did. Good luck!
I have read the answer of someone who said tea tree oil doesn't work. I don't think she read the part of using a lice treatment from the health food store first. Lice do not like tea tree oil and will avoid it so it is an effective preventative measure. Suffocation does work with the plastic bag if left on a hour but it only kills lice and does not kill the eggs. That is why if you continue to use tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner for a full month you will get rid of the lice. Suggestion about a stronger chemical or natural remedy that is the question and personal choice! I for one would prefer a natural remedy. My meaning about colour not working is that the lice is still in your home so yes it would kill the lice and nits in your hair but the lice will just jump back in and have a party in the new playground! Also place all stuffed animals in a plastic bag with any comforters that cannot be washed . Tie the bag securely and place somewhere for two weeks . The lice will die and any nits that hatch will also die as they don't have a food supply. Wash all clothing in vinegar and water let soak . Use hot water on items which can tolerate and let soak. Use bag option for all others. Good luck !

The study
133 patients with head lice were given a nontoxic lotion (Cetaphil cleanser) and instructed to:
Apply to the entire scalp. Leave in for 2 minutes, then comb out the excess.
Dry it with a hair dryer (to suffocate the lice).
Leave the dried lotion on the scalp for at least 8 hours.
Shampoo it all out.
Wash clothes and heat pillow cases, sheets, etc in the dryer for %26gt; 10 minutes.
Repeat once a week for up to 3 weeks.
What the study found
The overall long-term cure rate was 94-96%. (Removing the nits with a comb did not improve the success rate.)
What the study suggests
For people with head lice, slathering the scalp with Cetaphil and drying it (per the directions above) suffocates the lice and may be an effective new treatment.
A weird question about lice?
NO lice are usually brown or grey in color, so if you die it brown it will actually be harder to see them....
We had an awful breakout where my kids went to grade school a few years back and I didn't think I would EVER get rid of it from my daughters hair (her hair is really thick and brown) None of the over the counter treatments were working, I used home remedies (mayo, vinegar etc.) but no luck... So I ended up taking her to the doctor and they prescribed a stronger treatment and it worked....
FYI: the Tea Tree oil idea that Collette gave you didn't work on my daughter, I tried that as well....
A weird question about lice?
NOOOO DONT CUT YOUR HAIR!!!! my niece had got lice and it scared the crap outta me. my friends were black and said the reason why black people dont get lice is because of the hair grease. so i greased my scalp and hair like there was no tomorrow and i didnt get it. my hair is very thick and was long at the time. and tea tree oil isnt very easy to find. but hair grease is. just buy a thing of it and part the hair and grease the crap out of your scalp.

Use the shampoo for lice. After you're done, slather your hair in olive oil. And I mean slather. It'll be messy. Wrap your hair in a towel and let it sit for a couple of hours. You have to get the eggs off of your hair shaft.
If you have a breakout of lice in your home, get all the linens, toys, clothes, anything that has come into contact with you or your kids head, bag them and put them outside for a couple of days. Lice can't live off of the head for very long. They are a parasite and need your blood to live.
Buy some tea tree oil, and add a few drops to your shampoo and conditioner whenever you wash you or your kids hair. For whatever reason, tea tree oil seems to repel lice.

With these lil critters it takes diligence and patience. Definately do a head check on urself and every member of ur family while u have it. Regular weekly headchecks help in prevention. Also, while u have lice, keep ur hair pinned up. Apparently, using hairspray or gel in ur hair helps cuz it makes it harder for the things to cling to ur hair. May i also suggest trying mineral oil mixed with apple cider vinegar. Mix with equal amounts and then cover ur head with a shower cap. Leave on for about an hour or two and then go through ur hair with a nit comb. Good luck.

OK did u bag up all the kids stuffed animals? also if u die ur hair brown they might and might not be easier to see and to get rid of them u have to through every strand of hair and pick them out one at a time.
A weird question about lice?
Bag everything up and take it out of the house. Put all the laundry in the wash and use the long cycle. spray your house down like there is no tomorrow. You and your kids get a clean outfit together and go to someone elses house who will let you wash your hair with lice shampoo, make sure all the knits are out and change into clean clothes, bag the dirty ones and wash them when you get home. Make sure you spray around the washer before you put them in so if any are on the clothes, if they jump off they will die in that stuff. This should be thourough enough to get rid of them all. Make sure you find out who they are getting lice from and keep them away from those people until those people take care of business.
