Children and scissors?

i have a 5 year old who just today cut her hair. she had hair down to about her shoulder blades, but now it's to her ears. why do kids do this? i was upset but then she looked so funny with some really short hair and some long.

My daughter did that, right after she watched Mulan. The worst part was one side she just took a little off the ends, and the other side was all kinds of lengths clear up to her ears. I was so mad at her I could have spit fire. Then last year she started to cut her own bangs, need less to say she's not allowd to have scissors unsupervised anymore.

Why kids to that it's hard to say I've tried to cut my bangs when I was a kid, but never anything to my whole head.

It's their way of stating their independence. Up until now you have probably always decided how her hair should look. Plus, it's a way to do something they know they shouldn't do...she found a pair of scissors and "secretly" fixed her own hair...this usually only happens once in life.

I have no idea, my little cousin did the same thing, I think it is the infatuation with experimenting, it is a faze and they will get over it

my little boy did the same thing last week..wonder if its something in the air...lol...i know why mine did it, it was because i had to trim his little brothers hair and he wanted his hair cut to, so he desided to do it himself..

It is a stage, thank god. First, take her to Super-cuts and have it evened out. If she was upset about how she looked after she cut it, it won't happen again. If she wasn't upset, make that boundary with her that scissors are for paper, not hair. She should be able to respect this new rule and not do it again. Be sure to take pictures, though. It will be funny in a few years, and it will mortify her in ten.

really it's just curiosity and they don't fully understand that they will make their hair look awful. They see other people cut hair with scissors and want to see what will happen. Most kids don't do it more than once. ;-)

my lil cousin did that bcoz my friend got a fade so he got a razor and tried 2 do a fade 2 himself-he was 7- maybe she just saw a friend with short hair and maybe she just wanted 2 have her hair the same way
